If there is a lot of ice build-up in your fridge then it will cause it to work very inefficiently and it will not be able to cool as per its maximum capacity. It will also cause the temperature to rise gradually. What happens is the ice build-up is sometimes so thick that the fan is not able to pull the air properly in order to cool it.
Let us give you a better explanation for this so you can understand this easily. Air has moisture in it and each time we open the freezer door the moisture condenses and freezes inside. When the ice build-up to a certain thickness level it will simply act as an insulating barrier which reduces the efficiency in the fridge.
In an extreme situation, it might cause the door to stuck and you have to apply a force that will cause it to break from some corners. It can also cause the body of the fridge to break due to expansion. If you don’t defrost your freezer for so long you will notice a lot of ice buildup on all sides until there is no space left to put anything else inside.

I have a 3 yr old Samsung American style fridge / freezer.
Its been fine until 3 days ago. The freezer now makes a very loud noise most of the time – a bit like being on a building site – – I have a hunch its the fan which circulates the air, but I am no technician.
The only way to stop the noise t is to open the door.
Could it be that it needs defrosting? I came across your website today while trying to find out how to fix this.
I could not find anything that resembles a drainage hose, anywhere !!?? So Im perplexed HELP! any ideas please?
